Lemmy

Connect Lemmy to Postclay

Lemmy needs no separate token — just your normal account login and the community you want to post to.

Lemmy communities are how a lot of open-source, tech and hobbyist audiences organize post-Reddit — Postclay schedules to a specific community on a specific instance, so a link-aggregator-style post fits into the same calendar as your other platforms.

Setup steps

  1. Have your Lemmy account ready on any instance (e.g. lemmy.world) — no app or token to create.
  2. In Postclay, enter the instance URL, your username or email, your password, and the community to post to (e.g. technology for a local community, or [email protected] for a remote one).
  3. The first line of your post becomes the Lemmy post title, so keep it short and clear.

Limits & requirements

A Lemmy post body allows up to 10,000 characters, with a separate 200-character title that Postclay derives from the first line of your post — keep that first line short. Only a single image can be attached per post; Lemmy has no native video upload path.

What Postclay does differently for Lemmy

Lemmy is the only BYO platform without any token or app to create — Postclay authenticates directly against your instance's own login API using your username and password, exchanges it once for a session token, and never stores the password itself. Every other connect flow on this page asks for a token; this is the one exception, made as transparent as possible.

AI generation, tuned for Lemmy

Lemmy's post title comes from the first line of your text, so Postclay's AI caption writer is prompted to lead with a clear, short opening line for Lemmy specifically — not the same opening style it would generate for a platform without a separate title field.

Troubleshooting

My post published with a strange title.
Lemmy requires a separate title field, so Postclay uses the first line of your post text as the title and the rest as the body — write a short, clear opening line if you want control over the title.
The connection fails even with the right password.
An account with two-factor authentication enabled currently can't complete Lemmy's password login — try a Lemmy account without 2FA, or a Lemmy alt account created specifically for posting.
My session stopped working after a while.
Lemmy's session tokens are long-lived but do eventually expire, and Lemmy has no refresh-token mechanism — reconnect with your username and password again to get a fresh session.

Common questions

Does two-factor authentication work?
An account with two-factor authentication enabled may not be able to connect — if it fails, try a Lemmy account without 2FA.
Can I post to a community on a different instance than my account?
Yes — use the community@instance form (e.g. [email protected]) even if your account lives elsewhere.
Is my Lemmy password stored anywhere?
No. It's sent once, directly to your own instance's official login endpoint, to obtain a session token — only that token is saved, and it's encrypted at rest. Postclay never stores or reuses the password itself.
Can I schedule a link post instead of a text post?
Not directly from the composer today — Postclay publishes your post as a text post to the community you specify; link posts need to be created manually on Lemmy.
